In addition to being one of the largest known carnivorous dinosaurs, Tyrannosaurus Rex – or abbreviated as T Rex – is a type of dinosaur that received the most media coverage. T Rex got the lead role in the movie “Jurassic Park” and exhibited at the main venue at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. The name Tyrannosaurus Rex means “tyrant lizard king” with “Tyranno” means tyrant in Greek; “Saurus” means lizard in Greek, and “Rex” means king in Latin.
This name was given in 1905 by Henry Fairfield Osborn, president of the American Museum of Natural History at the time. T Rex is a member of the family Tyrannosauridae or large predatory dinosaurs with small forelimbs and has two fingers. Besides Tyrannosauridae, the other tyrannosaurs generation includes Prodeinodon, Nanotyrannus, Gorgosaurus, Albertosaurus, Eotyrannus, Daspletosaurus, Alectrosaurus, Chingkankousaurus, Alioramus and Tarbosaurus.
The T Rex skeleton of the largest and most complete ever found dubbed Sue, named after its discoverer, paleontologist named Sue Hendrickson. The measurements of Sue concluded that T Rex is one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs ever lived, has a height of 4 meters up to the hips and length of 12.3 m. In addition, this creature has an estimated weight of 8.2 tons.
T Rex has a thigh and a strong tail to balance a large head (skull Sue has a length of 1.5 m). This wild animal is expected to run at a speed of 17-40 km / h. Front arm of the T Rex has two fingers are weak, so it may not be used to kill or shoved food into its mouth. On this basis, T Rex rely on large mouth to kill their prey. While the function of the front arm is still not known with certainty.
According to the study, this dinosaur had the strongest bite of any land animal that ever lived. A T Rex bite from an estimated strength of 57,000Newtons, equivalent to the power of the medium sized elephant sitting. T Rex has a full mouth of jagged teeth up to 30 cm long and is the largest carnivorous dinosaur teeth ever found.
Not all of the dinosaur’s teeth have the same functionality. In particular, the front teeth serve to grip and pull the prey; side teeth for tearing flesh; and rear teeth serves to cut the meat before it is swallowed.
T Rex is a big carnivores and primarily eat herbivorous dinosaurs, including Triceratops and Edmontosaurus. The predator is believed to obtain food by hunting, but also willing to take a dead dinosaur. Scientists are not yet sure whether T Rex hunt alone, or hunt in groups.
When and Where T Rex Life?
T Rex fossil found in a variety of rock formations dating from the Maastrichtian of the late Cretaceous period that lasted 67 million – 65 million years ago, or towards the end of the Mesozoic Era. T Rex is one of the last non-avian dinosaurs were alive before the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs. Have a higher mobility than many other terrestrial dinosaurs, T Rex roam throughout the western region of North America, this land is currently named as Laramidia.
More than 50 T Rex skeleton has been unearthed. Some of these nearly intact skeleton and at least one skeleton still has soft tissue and protein. Fossil hunter, Barnum Brown, discovered the skeleton of the first partial T Rex in the Hell Creek Formation, Montana, in 1902. He later sold this specimen to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh. Another T Rex fossil discovery on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
